Jebel Ghaw in the Dark
Jebel Ghaw in the Dark
2012
The summer is squarely upon us. After some day time mis-adventures on Jebel Sumayni is means only one thing... night climbing. We waited until the moon was fullish and then went for it one Thursday after work.
J1, J2 and I arrived at the end of the track just before sunset. The summit was clearly visible all we had to do was get there. With the route taken off google earth on our phones we set off up the wadi. We went over a few pools then the real climbing started; the moon as promised was shining bright. We made to the ridge but what faced us was a wall of bear rock. We could have gone round it but we went straight along then up semi rock climbing but there just enough gradient not feel that one slip would have to be followed by an awkward phone call. Once we made it to the top the wall the summit re-emerged. Walking along the ridge then climbing Down-up-down-up-down-up then we at the summit.
Jebel Ghaw at night was enjoyable and different. We avoided all the snakes apart from the ones J2 was impersonating. Only once I was down did I realise how sharp limestone with quite few cuts but it was fine. We will definitely down another night climb, we just have to choose the next mountain...
