Jebel Qatar/Hanging Gardens Alternative Route
Jebel Qatar/Hanging Gardens Alternative Route
2012
It was the day of two differing plans with no one realising until we were half way up the mountain that we were planning to do different routes! Anyway...
We began with the normal slog to the mountains which was passable; a catch up with the wife as I have been working in Qatar all week with a sound track from the IPhone in the back ground.
Parked up jumped out and to paraphrase “Are going this way?”, “No I though we are going this way?”, “Errr up the wadi?”, “No round the back of the mountain?”, “Are you sure?”, “Yep think so”, “How about up there?”, “Not the wadi?” “Umm errr ummm?”. And so we proceed right down the middle!
Jebel Qatar is a such a beautiful place that I do not think it makes much difference which way you go. We went right up across a ridge and hit the bottom of the other worldly plateau. Round the base and back, then up on top of the plateau for lunch and a de-brief of what happened, what everyone thought before the start and what everyone thought now!
After lunch we went straight for the wadi that has put a great gash in the plateau. This wadi has been beautifully carved by millennia of fast flowing storm surges; including great big pot holes which I have been reliably informed are caused by a rock trapped with a small pot hole being whizzed round by a torrent wearing it to a bigger pot hole. Never say you don’t learn anything reading this.
Further down the wadi James was advocating a vaguely suicidal climb down the wadi. After a good 10 minutes of contemplation we decided no and enjoyed our walk back retracing our steps to the base of the plateau and then down a steep wadi strewn with large rocks.
Jebel Qatar is beautiful just make sure you all know where you are going before you set off!
