Jebel Hatta
Jebel Hatta
2011
It started with quick glance at google earth followed by a “why not?”. The idea was to find the shortest route to the top of Jebel Hatta. If you see the map I think we achieved well by getting a car close to the summit.
However this still left 7km and it was August with August heat. Not to be deterred though we aimed to set off from Dubai with high spirits at 4am. After many check points, a slightly late start and a friend’s flat tyre we arrived at the start of the hike at 7am. The temperature was beautiful.
A quick scramble and we were in the wadi bottom for the slow incline to our destination. We came across several pools and a lot more wildlife than we were expecting, there were snakes, fish, wild gazelles and water scorpions to name but a few. We pressed on not really noticing the temperature rise until about 11am. Then with still a few km to the summit we realised why people do not tend to go hiking in August. The heat from the sun was extremely intense. Every rock became untouchable apart from the quickest of moments. When we reached the top of the col it was decided, against all our competitive instincts, to turn back. The heat was oppressive and by the time we reached the car it’s sanctuary was welcomed with open arms. On the way back a refreshing dip in Hatta pools made everyone feel like new.
I think we will attempt this again only next time not in August...
